The work of a professional interpreter is not easy. Most of the time, we work in fast-paced, high-pressure environments where accuracy is critical.There are a few key practices that can significantly improve the quality of an interpretation session, and make the process smoother for everyone involved:
- Set expectations from the start.
Provide brief instructions on how you would like to work with the interpreter. This helps smooth the session. If possible, share a short overview of the case. For example, in depositions, giving context about the subject matter allows the interpreter to switch gears to the specific terminology. - Speak clearly and make pauses.
Even though interpreters are trained in terminology, memory retention, note-taking, and cultural nuances, communication is most effective when speakers use clear language and speak in short segments during consecutive interpretation. This allows the interpreter to accurately convey the message without needing clarification or repetition. - Allow the interpreter to manage the flow when needed.
The interpreter is the only party who understands both languages. The interpreter can recognize when the (LEP) individual is not directly answering a question, repeating themselves, or going off topic. Allowing the Interpreter to pause the ELP when needed helps the session run smoothly and to have a cleaner record. - Interpreters interpret meanings—not word-for-word translation.
Interpreters do not translate word for word; they interpret meaning to the context. Even if you know both languages, remember that one word, especially in Spanish, has multiple meanings depending on context.
Working effectively with an interpreter is a collaborative effort. When all parties follow certain protocols, communication becomes more accurate, efficient, and productive.
